My name is Louise Rogers, and I am an Independent Funeral Celebrant, living in Maidstone, Kent, with my husband Shaun, an engineer, and our three sons.
I am an English graduate, and have a true passion for the written word. I spent many years working in the civil service, undertaking roles in various government departments including the Home Office and The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. In more recent years I worked as a local authority registrar and celebrant, a job that I enjoyed immensely, and which provided me with the experience and inspiration to be able to become an independent celebrant, hence the reason that Family Farewells came into existence.
Many people in our modern society, whilst still retaining certain elements of faith, do not have a direct connection with their local church, and therefore can regard the more traditional funeral service as being somewhat impersonal and incompatible with their wishes and requirements.
A civil celebrant will work closely with a family to help them plan a truly individual tribute that reflects the life, personality, and values of the person that has died; and respects their beliefs, be they spiritual, religious or non-religious.
If you decide that a celebrant lead ceremony is the most appropriate choice for your loved one, I will come to meet you either at your home or other suitable venue, to discuss the life, beliefs and wishes of the person that has died.
I then write a caring and meaningful ceremony that is bespoke and special; which most importantly of all, truly and accurately reflects the life and experiences of the deceased. The draft is then sent to you for approval, giving you the option to amend as many times as you feel necessary before I deliver it on the day of the ceremony.
I can offer advice and guidance on any aspect of the funeral service, including poetry and music choices. While I encourage family member or close friends to write their own tributes, I understand that it can be an unnecessary pressure to stand up and read at the funeral of a loved one and I am therefore more than happy to deliver these on your behalf.
I love my job, and feel truly honoured and privileged to be able to help and provide guidance to families at such a difficult time in their lives.
I would like to take this opportunity of thanking you on behalf of the family for developing and delivering such an excellent ceremony. We all really appreciated the effort that you put into creating a picture of dad that reflected his spirit and character. We had many comments after the service from his friends and neighbours also saying how well you had caught his character.
Personally I liked your friendly and intimate delivery but would also like to thank you for the sensitive way that you got my Mum talking about dad and included some of her feelings for him in your 'appreciation'. I know that my Mum really felt that dad had been recognised and celebrated and it gave her some comfort. Your sincere enjoyment of people in all their fullness, richness and idiosyncrasy really shines through.
